3% back on everything, 3.6% on cash, and they'll mail a check for you

Why Robinhood Gold and Robinhood Banking are one of the smartest money moves we've made - and how they make investing early and often almost automatic.

This is the first post in a new collection I’m calling Things I Think Are Cool - tools, products and ideas that have earned a spot in our day-to-day. First up is Robinhood.

Most people know Robinhood as the stock trading app. Over the last couple of years it has quietly become a full bank too - and for us, the math works out better than anything we’ve used before.

Heads up - there’s a referral link at the end of this post. If you sign up through it, you can claim a free stock and I may earn a stock reward too.

3% back on every card purchase

The Robinhood Gold Card pays 3% cash back on everything - no rotating categories, no caps, nothing to activate each quarter. Groceries, gas, utilities, all of it. Travel booked through Robinhood’s travel portal earns 5%.

Most flat-rate cash back cards top out at 2%. On ~$2,000 a month of card spending, that’s $720 a year at 3% vs $480 at 2% - $240 more for doing nothing different.

The one requirement is a Robinhood Gold membership - $50/year. The card itself has no annual fee, and at 3% back, Gold pays for itself after ~$1,667 of spending.

The cash back can also drop straight into your Robinhood investing account - more on why that matters below.

3.6% APY on cash

Robinhood Banking is a real checking and savings setup - debit card, account and routing numbers, direct deposit, mobile check deposit, the works. Banking services are provided by Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC.

As of this writing (October 2026), savings earns 3.6% APY - and checking can too, depending on your tier - when you have Gold and direct deposit at least $1,000 a month into Robinhood checking. That’s ~$360 a year on every $10,000 sitting there.

Rates move with the market, so check the current number before you switch anything over.

Invest early, invest often

This is the real reason I like having everything in one place - it makes investing early and often almost automatic.

Here’s a simple example. Put $100 a month into the market for 30 years at a hypothetical 7% average annual return and you end up with ~$122,000 - from $36,000 of your own money. Wait 10 years to start, do the same thing for 20 years, and you end up with ~$52,000. Starting a decade earlier more than doubles the result.

Robinhood makes the “often” part easy. Recurring investments let you pick an amount and a schedule and forget about it, Gold Card cash back lands in your investing account, and moving money from savings to investing is a tap.

(7% is an illustration, not a promise - markets go down too, and nothing is guaranteed.)

They’ll mail a check for you

This is a cool one that doesn’t get talked about enough. In the app you enter who the check is for, their address and the amount - and Robinhood prints and mails a real paper check for you. No checkbook, no envelopes, no stamps.

I’ve used it many times - it’s perfect for anyone who still only takes paper checks. It’s free with Gold and qualifying direct deposit ($1.99 per check otherwise).

Is it worth it?

For us, yes. The quick math:

  • Gold costs $50/year.
  • 3% back covers that after ~$1,667 of card spending.
  • 3.6% APY covers it with ~$1,400 in savings.
  • Mailed checks, recurring investing and everything else are a bonus.

A few things to know before you sign up:

  • The 3.6% rate requires $1,000+ a month of direct deposit into Robinhood checking.
  • Pay the card off in full every month - carrying a balance at credit card interest wipes out the 3% instantly.
  • Rates and terms change. Everything here is as of October 2026.
  • Investing involves risk, including losing money.
